new car park P1 airport Hamburg

The “Kleine Mandel” (little almond) is a large garage for approx. 2,800 vehicles at the entrance to the main area of the Hamburg airport terminal. Integration of the building in the structures on site, typological positioning, architectural formation as a distinct, free-standing building, and an optimal ratio of parking spaces to area demand and construction costs were the essential design parameters. The five-story parking garage with six parking levels now outlines a rounded-off triangle, which precisely is embedded in the surroundings and easily recognizable. The specific form of an isosceles triangle enabled through repeating building elements, efficient construc- tion and comparatively low land use for the required parking spaces. In this way—and as a result of the generously-sized inner courtyard—no mechanical ventilation is required and the use of artificial light could be minimized which also eases orientation in the building.
