Geriatrical hospital Floridsdorf, Vienna
|
|
The geriatric hospital with day-care centre closes the last remaining
gap between Floridsdorf hospital and the underground station of
the U6 in Floridsdorf. This part of the town, originally built
in the sixties and seventies, is the realisation of a social town
development plan from the sixties and includes colleges, indoor
swimming baths and a hospital. The planners' original intention
is further accentuated by the wide pedestrian avenue from the
hospital to the underground station. Essentially, the building complex consists of 3 buildings. Both residential buildings with 3 wards face the pedestrian avenue, whereas the building with the day-care centre, therapy facilities and administration offices is situated at the other side of the plot of land. To afford the necessary privacy -- in particular on the ground floor -- in spite of the intentional closeness to the pedestrian zone, the building units were raised by almost one metre above the level of the road. Integrated into the residential buildings are deep cuts to allow the daylight to penetrate deeply into the buildings. The wards are L-shaped to reduce the length of the corridors, which also has a beneficial effect on orientation and clarity of design. The shape of the building units absorbs the town's structure in the form of pavilion buildings. The facade's roughly coloured mineral rendering is interrupted by sharp-edged aluminium windows arranged in box-shapes protruding from the rendering level, thus creating a light-and-shadow effect on the facade. | |
